Prime Day vs. Black Friday 2023 — Best Baby Gear to Buy on Black … – What To Expect

Just so you know, What to Expect may earn commissions from the shopping links included on this page. All sales and prices are accurate at the time of publishing.
Next week, Amazon is holding Prime Big Deal Days, a two-day shopping event that gives Amazon Prime members a chance to save money on everyday essentials and big ticket items, while also getting ahead of the holiday shopping. But there is another money-saving event just around the corner. (And no, we’re not talking about Target Circle Week and Walmart Holiday Kickoff, which are happening this week and next week, respectively). Black Friday, the post-Thanksgiving sale that’s synonymous with huge discounts, will be here before you know it.

Although sales like these are welcome events for parents-to-be and caregivers looking to cut down on the high costs of raising a child, they can also be overwhelming. With so many deals available, it’s hard to know which ones are truly standout and will allow you to stretch your dollar the furthest.
Fortunately, we at What to Expect are experts in not only finding deals, but finding the ones that save you the most money. We combed through previous Black Friday sales and evaluated offereings from last year’s fall Prime Day (known as Prime Early Access Sale), determining which pregnancy and baby items you should buy during Prime Big Deal Days and which ones you should wait until Black Friday to purchase.
We, of course, understand that you may have your go-to brands and some of them may have good sales happening right now. If that’s the case, then by all means, take advantage! But if you aren’t particular or you can wait to buy that item you’ve been eyeing, then this guide can help you save money. For even more insight, check out our roundup of the best Prime Big Deal Days sales.
And remember: we are always on the lookout for the best pregnancy and baby deals. Make sure to bookmark our weekly deals roundup to save money whenever you shop.

Pregnancy and baby gear you should consider buying during Prime Big Deal Days

Toys

One of the main missions of Prime Big Deal Days is to help people get ahead (and, of course, save) on their holiday shopping. For parents, that means getting ahold of the most coveted toys for a fraction of the cost. Last year, Fisher-Price, Melissa and Doug and Leap Frog offered up to 50 percent off beloved baby and toddler toys. Although the deals won’t apply to every item in the brands’ catalog, you’re sure to find a few hot-ticket toys to give as gifts.

Bottles

Last year, brands like Dr. Brown, ComotomoNUK and Tommee Tippee were 20 to 30 percent off during the two-day shopping event. Since many parents recommend testing a few bottles before settling on “the one,” this is a great chance to purchase a few brands without worrying about wasting money. Or, if your baby isn’t too particular, it’s a great opportunity to stock up. For parents of toddlers, there will likely be a few sippy cups on sale.

High chairs

If you’ve put off buying a high chair until baby is ready for solids, Prime Big Deal Days might be the time to act. Last year, Graco’s high-quality high chairs were marked down 30 percent during the fall sale. And since many high chairs can be adjusted to accommodate your growing child, you’re essentially getting a deal on their lifetime dining seat.

Frida Baby items

Friday Baby has built a fandom by creating genius products that help with icky situations, like baby boogers and crusty cradle cap. In 2022, many of these items were 30 percent off during the Prime Early Access Sale. Whether you’re looking for a way to remove baby’s snot or a humidifier that doubles as a night light, you can stock up on baby care essentials without spending a fortune.

Frida Mom kits

Why should baby get all the TLC? Several of Frida Mom’s life-saving items (including its Mom Must-Have Award-winning postpartum recovery kit) were 30 percent off during last year’s fall Prime Day sale. These mom care kits make great gifts, so buy one for you and a few to keep on hand.

Diapering gear

Last year, parents refilled thier changing tables for a lot less thanks to fall Prime Day deals on diapers, wipes and butt paste. WaterWipeswere 35 percent off, while PampersHonest Company and Babyganics offered up to 40 percent off diapers. If you can swing it, Christine Mattheis, What to Expect’s Group VP, Content & Brand Solutions, suggests buying at least one box each of sizes 1 through 3 if you’re pregnant or have a newborn; if your baby’s older, buy at least one box of whatever size they’re in now, plus one box of the following two sizes. In doing so, you are saving a significant amount on something you’re guaranteed to need eventually.

Graco pack ’n plays

A portable play yard isn’t necessary, but if you can score a Graco one on sale, why not buy it? In 2022, select Graco pack ‘n plays were up to 40 percent off. This includes some of the more tricked-out models, like the Graco Pack ‘n Play Travel Dome, which has a bassinet and changing table attachment.

Diaper bags

If history is any indicator, diaper bags will be more discounted during Black Friday. And because Black Friday is a shopping event for all retailers, you’ll have more options and a better chance of finding the bag you really want on sale. Last year, for example, brands like Skip Hop and JuJuBe offered up to 25 percent off bags purchased on their sites. Meanwhile, popular diaper bags were 30 percent off at Nordstrom.

Strollers

You most likely have some time before you actually need a stroller, so why not wait to get the one you want for a little less money. Although some strollers will be marked down during Prime Big Deal Days, the majority of brands are holding off till Black Friday. And you can find them at a number of retailers. Last Black Friday, Amazon offered up to 30 percent off select strollers from GracoMaxi-Cosi and Baby Jogger, just to name a few.

Car seats

Like strollers, you can probably wait a bit before buying a car seat. And doing so may pay off, as car seats have been up to 34 percent off during past Black Friday sales. Amazon has had the biggest selection in the past, with deals on brands like GracoChicco and Evenflo

Cribs

A crib is a necessary purchase for babies. It’s also a pricey one. Although there will be some discounted cribs available during the Prime Big Deal Days, the steeper discounts will likely be available on Black Friday. In the past, retailers like Walmart and Wayfair have slashed crib prices by up to 30 percent. And your dollar will go even further if you purchase one of the many convertible cribs on sale. These types of cribs grow with your child, becoming a toddler bed, day bed or full-sized bed when the time is right.

Breast pumps and pumping accessories

When it comes to breastfeeding essentials, the big money-saving opportunity will be during Black Friday. In the past, many brands have offered up to 30 percent off their electric pumps and up to 25 percent off accessories like storage bags and coolers. Make sure to check out Amazon on Black Friday for discounts on breastfeeding gear from MedelaElvie and Willow

Smart baby monitors

Tech-loving parents will have plenty of options to save on Black Friday. In previous years, brands like Owlet and Nanit have offered 30 percent off their smart baby monitors. Since these are more expensive than your traditional monitors, that 30 percent off makes a huge difference.

UppaBaby strollers

A top-tier stroller brand, UppaBaby items only go on sale during Black Friday — and even that isn’t always a guarantee. Even though the quality build and smooth ride of its strollers are worth every penny, your wallet will appreciate you waiting a month to make your purchase. Nordstrom has offered up to 25 percent of UppaBaby strollers in the past, so you’ll want to look there first.
