Students at Loyola University Maryland can now shop at their campus convenience stores and simply leave without checking out.
This change was made possible through a new initiative from Grubhub Campus, which is bringing Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology to its campus partners.
“Our installation with Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology is another example of how we are strengthening our relationship with our campus partners with cost-saving technology and driving student adoption,” said Eric Ferguson, chief operations officer at Grubhub, in a statement.
Using the new program is simple: Diners scan a QR code in the Grubhub app to enter the store, and the technology will detect what shoppers take from or return to the shelves. The payment will then automatically be deducted from their meal plan or another payment method linked to the account.
The technology is powered by AI-like computer vision and deep-learning techniques, which include generative AI, according to a statement.
“Loyola is proud to partner with Grubhub and Amazon to bring this technology to our students,” said John Coppola, vice president for finance and administration and treasurer for Loyola University Maryland. “We strive to bring innovation to our campus, and this is a perfect example of our drive to lead in technological applications for our students, faculty, and staff.”
Amazon’s Just Walk Out platform and others like it have been showing up in a number of noncommercial venues as diners seek quicker, more convenient ways to get the foods and beverages they want. Cashierless tech was on display at multiple Major League Baseball stadiums this summer, and it’s been a feature on college campuses as well.
