Gloria Berbena, Minister Counsellor for Public Diplomacy at the US Embassy India in New Delhi, highlighted the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) and immersive technology in shaping the future of storytelling and journalism. She spoke at a two-day conclave titled “Future of Journalism – how Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR), and Virtual Reality (VR) videos help support media literacy and press freedom” held in Kolkata on July 27 and 28.
Ms. Berbena expressed that as the world moves towards a three-dimensional reality, AI and immersive technology have the potential to reshape the future of storytelling and journalism. She emphasized that the US Department of State focuses on AI because it is at the center of the global technological revolution. The advancements in AI technology offer both great opportunities and challenges. By working together with partners and allies, the United States can further scientific and technological capabilities, promote democracy and human rights, and establish shared norms and agreements on the responsible use of AI.
The conclave, organized by U.S.-based Meridian International in collaboration with the US Public Diplomacy Team at the U.S. Consulate General Kolkata, aimed to provide training on AI, AR, and VR to 30 journalists and media professionals from across India, including Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland. Participants had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with AI, VR, and AR demonstrations by experts and trainers from the United States and India.
